Thoughts

We will greatly miss dear Heinz. I have always been aware of Heinz as my grandfather's much-loved and admired cousin, and since my childhood felt truly valued and cared for by Heinz. I and my family will treasure the letters we shared, and the wonderful times we enjoyed in Felixstowe, London and Paris together. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Heinz. Thank you for your care and encouragement, for sharing your wisdom, love, and stories. Despite the distance you did not feel far away. Your and Grandpa Bob's bond and story lives on through your children and grandchildren, and that is a great gift we have to thank you both for. Love always, Katrina (Australia)

I first got in touch with Heinz almost exactly ten years ago when I was doing research on Alice Ekert-Rotholz. He was always friendly and supportive, my most valued expert on his mother's work and my most competent reader, but more than that he became a friend, and I really feel honoured to have known him. I'll miss his wisdom, his comments, and his view on the world.

The importance of cousins. I will never forget the first time I met Heinz at our house in Melbourne on a business trip in the 1970’s. Heinz was wearing a very posh suit, and looking very dapper. This was the first time that cousin Heinz had met up with my dad ‘Bob’ on his visit travelling to the down under. Having grown up in the southern hemisphere, the idea of having lots of cousins sounded very exciting. I always wished for more relatives. So in 1981 I took my first overseas flight to the UK with my dad Bob (cousin). This was the opportunity to meet my Redwood cousins whom I’d never met before. The Rothols family was a small family and I knew very little about my ancestry. So my dad decided to adopt all of his friends they were honorary pseudo cousins, the more the merrier. Heinz was so precious to me, he always made me feel so welcomed. He was generous to let me stay at Highbury Hill as I adjusted to living in London. Heinz was my mentor. At the age of 42, I was looking for a new profession. I remember sitting with Heinz in the flat when he said that at 42 it would be the right time of my life to make the change, which was great advice. I so admired Heinz, he was so wise and knowledgable, accomplished, a man of so many skills, a lover of culture, a lover of horticulture. Most of all, I give thanks for all the support that Heinz provided. He was unique, A worldly man of high principles, a gentleman the list goes on. A loving and warm humanitarian who leaves a legacy in his line of work spread around the world Thank you Heinz for all the memories, the trips to Paris, to Venice, the wonderful family gatherings at Felixstowe, and restaurants in London, Covent Garden to the opera with Heinz and Alison which was exquisite and will never ever be forgotten. I feel so far from my cousins but we are family. Heinz is sorely missed. All I can say is I loved you my dear Adorable Heinz, you’ll always be with us. Cherished for ever. Louise
